How this is calculated

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². Weight classes follow the World Health Organization; surgical candidacy follows the 2022 ASMBS/IFSO indications: surgery is recommended at a BMI of 35 or more and considered at 30–34.9 with metabolic disease. BMI alone does not choose the operation; that is decided after examination and tests. Read more about bariatric surgery and sleeve gastrectomy.

Frequently asked questions

What BMI do you need for a gastric sleeve?

The 2022 ASMBS and IFSO guidelines recommend bariatric surgery at a BMI of 35 or more, whether or not you have related conditions. Surgery can also be considered at a BMI of 30 to 34.9 when there is metabolic disease such as type 2 diabetes and non-surgical treatment has not worked.

Does BMI alone decide whether I need surgery?

No. BMI is only the starting point. The surgeon chooses the right operation after examining you and reviewing your tests, related conditions, previous weight-loss attempts, and any reflux.

What should I do after I know my BMI?

Send your height, weight and result to Dr. Yasser’s team on WhatsApp, with any chronic conditions or previous operations. They will book your consultation and tell you which tests to bring.
